What’s Going On? Music Has Always Been Revolutionary

Black music is America. We have shaped, birthed, and crafted sounds that don’t just move culture; they transform it. We sing. We write. We channel the energy of revolution and resistance with every note, every beat, every word that leaves our mouths.
Now more than ever, the world needs your voice. We need music that speaks truth to power, that resonates across cultures, economies, and social divides. In this moment, silence is not an option. We can never be silent.
Our ancestors carried their energy, their spirituality, their music across oceans, nurturing it despite whips and chains. They sang through the darkest, most degrading chapters of human history. Their voices melded with the indigenous and disenfranchised of this land, emerging new and triumphant—ancient and disillusioned, angry and outraged. This is our legacy. This is our calling. You are here in this moment with these gifts to continue that legacy, to fuel the movements and momentum that will carry us through this darkness.
Civil rights was never a moment in time. It is a continuum. We are always refining and defining our right to exist, to live, to thrive in the deeply flawed country we call home. We cannot allow the erosion of civil liberties, unlawful governance, or the loud, bloodthirsty racists and fascists to overtake us. We cannot let them silence us or force us into submission.
While not all of us will march on picket lines, lead movements, or run for office, we can use our voices, our talent, our platforms to speak loudly, to inspire, to motivate—and to be the soundtrack of resistance. We can do nothing less than that. We cannot hide. We cannot cater to those who would silence us;or our fans. At this moment, the question is simple: Where were you? How did you rise? Don’t be a Nicki Minaj—bowing to an authoritarian system that seeks to erase you.
For women, for Black creators, for marginalized artists everywhere: your silence is a loss for the world. Your creativity is a weapon. Your story is a blueprint. Your sound is a spark. The world doesn’t need more background noise. Iit needs art that wakes people up, moves them, and demands accountability.
I challenge every artist reading this: step into your role as a cultural leader. Craft the songs that will become the anthems of this generation. Don’t wait for permission. Don’t wait for someone else to give you a platform. Claim your stage. Claim your story. Claim your power.
